Project Toaster is a unique and mind bending first person audio puzzle experiment I designed and developed with eight other students. In the experiment you control a man and hear through the ears of a woman. This way the audio and visuals are out of sync and the laws of nature can be bend.

The goal of the game is to find the woman. You do this through sound. When you walk the footsteps you make are heard through the ears of the woman. The loudness and direction of the sound gives you clues on where the woman might be. Besides your own footsteps you must also use sounds from other characters and objects in your quest to find the woman.

I came up with the concept and was one of the designers on the team.

Made in one week by students who didn’t know eachother, Kamal is a first place price winning platformer with a unique twist. At first Kamal appears to be a standard platformer. But when you get in the posession of a golden ViewMaster, made by the gods, you see the world in a whole different perspective. By pausing the game and moving the camera you can parallax different layers of the same level.

At one point in the game the player tries to jump over a gap filled with spikes. During the jump the plaer realizes that the gap is too large to jump over. Right before he hit the spikes the player pauses the game, parallax the ledge closer to him, so that the cap appears to be smaller. When the player unpauses the game the optical trick became reality and the player jumped over the gap.

Project Toaster is a first person audio puzzle game that can only be played using a surround set that is turned 45 degrees.

In this experiment you control a guard who’s looking for a girl. The girl keeps on hiding in small buildings. You have to figure out in which building she’s in and catch her. But if you choose the wrong building you fail.

But how do you choose the correct building? You do that by using your ears. Well not your ears, but the ears of the girl. Because in this experiment you hear through the ears of the girl and you by using sounds like your own footsteps you can locate the girl.

For example: If i were to walk past the girl, I would hear my own footsteps passing by.

In the game you control two characters at the same time. You control the movements and the vision of a man while you control the hearing of a woman. This way the audio and visuals are out of sync and the laws of nature can be bend.

The first part of the game is all about finding the women through sounds. When you walk the footsteps you make are heard through the ears of the woman. The loudness and direction of the sound gives you clues on where the women might be. Besides your own footsteps you must also use sounds from other characters and objects in your quest to find the woman.

In the latter part of the game you get to control the volume of sound making objects and through this you change the position of the object in 3d space. For example: you are in a train and you can hear a train station in the distance. By turning up the volume of the train station sound you actually relocate the train station closer to your own position. The game will be released at the end of may 2009.

Because of this the players view of the surroundings is distorted. The retirement home consists out of 4 frames that make a hallway. These 4 frames are copied and shuffled around on a grid of 16.

When the grandmother wants to go to a certain frame, you will have to push her there. This isn’t as easy as it sounds, because you will have to break through the walls of logic to get her where she wants to be.

Pushing Daisy got an honorable mention from the jury. You can download Pushing Daisy in about a week.
